Apache Sun - Entrevista

(PT) Entrámos em contacto com os Apache Sun e conseguimos uma entrevista com a banda escocesa. 

São uma banda de rock psicadélico formada em Glasgow este ano e é constituída por Kris Mitchell (guitarra), Pete Bruce (baixista) e David Noble (baterista). A banda foi uma das escolhidas entre nós como um das Novas bandas que não devem passar despercebidas e como acreditamos seriamente que irão triunfar no futuro, quisemos contactá-los para que todos os portugueses e os demais viessem a conhecê-los melhor através do poder da palavra.

(ING) We contacted Apache Sun and successfully managed to get an interview with the Scottish band.

They are a psychedelic rock band formed in Glasgow this year and it consists of Kris Mitchell (guitar), Pete Bruce (bass) and David Noble (drums). The band was one of the chosen among us as one of the New bands that  should not go unnoticed post and as we truly believe that they will succeed in the future, we contacted them so that every Portuguese and others would get to know them better through the power of writting.

(PT) Como é que se conheceram e decidiram formar a banda?

Eu (o Kris) e o Pete somos meio-irmãos por isso conhecemo-nos ainda muito novos mas apenas começámos a escrever músicas juntos quando tínhamos à volta de uns 17/18 anos. Nós já tínhamos estado em diferentes bandas mas decidimos no ano passado experimentar e gravar algumas músicas nós mesmos.

(ING) How did you meet and when did you decide to start a band?
Me (Kris) and Pete are step brothers so we met at a fairly young age, but we didn't start writing and making music together until we were around 17/18. We had been in different bands before but decided last year to try and create and record some songs ourselves.

(PT) Porquê o nome Apache Sun?

Nós tínhamos ideias e sons nas nossas cabeças mas precisávamos de um título para o nosso projecto de gravação. Nós vemos Apache Sun como um certo lugar conceptual de onde a música vem, onde a inspiração vive. Quando escrevemos música vemos cada canção como uma paisagem e tentamos recriar isto com a maior precisão possível através do som. Todos estes sítios encontram-se no mundo de Apache Sun.

(ING) Why the name Apache Sun?

We had ideas and sounds in our head but we needed a title for our recording project. We see Apache Sun as this conceptual place where the music comes from, where the inspiration lives. When we write music we see each song as a landscape and we try and recreate this as accurately as possible through sound. All these places are within the world of Apache Sun.  

(PT) Que artistas e/ou bandas vos servem de inspiração?

Nós ganhamos inspiração através de sons, essencialmente. Ultimamente tem sido de bandas que estão a gravar música por si mesmos. Parece dar logo uma linha directa ao despertar inicial de criatividade. Tudo tem o seu lugar próprio e único e é definitivamente algo mais pessoal para o compositor. Eu acho que isso transparece com bandas como The Growlers, Tame Impala e La Femme. Mas todos nós fazemos uma vénia aos Beatles.

(ING) Which artists and/or bands inspire you the most?

We get inspired by sounds mostly, recently this has been from bands who are recording music by themselves. It seems to give more of a direct line to the initial spark of creativity, everything has its own unique place and it's definitely something more personal to the writer. I think this shines through with bands like The Growlers, Tame Impala and La Femme. But we all bow to the Beatles.

(PT) Normalmente bandas recentes são sempre comparadas a outras. Isto já aconteceu convosco?

Um pouco mas nunca ouvimos a mesma duas vezes, parece ser um espectro bastante amplo.

(ING) Usually upcoming bands are always compared to others. Has this already happened to you?

A little but we’ve never heard the same one twice. It seems to be quite a broad spectrum.

(PT) De onde vem a inspiração para as vossas letras?

Neste EP tentámos que a inspiração inicial para as canções viesse espontaneamente e com isto em mente gravámos as vozes na sua maioria com improvisos, fazíamos alguns takes de cada música e escolhíamos o melhor. Algumas como ‘Backseat Driver’ foram mais bem pensadas mas uma vez mais resultou dos improvisos do primeiro verso e daí tomou a sua forma. Assim, a maioria das letras são profundas reflexões do subconsciente suponho.

(ING) Where do you get inspiration for your lyrics?

On this EP we tried to let the songs primitive inspiration come through and with this in mind we recorded the vocals mostly ad-libbing, we would do a few takes of each song and choose the best. Some like 'Backseat Driver' were more thought out but again it stemmed from the ad-libbing of the first verse and from there it just took shape. So most of the lyrics are deep subconscious musings I suppose.

(PT) As vossas fotos e vídeos de música têm uma certa energia psicadélica que combina na perfeição com as vossas canções. Era essa a vossa intenção, a de levar as pessoas numa “viagem” enquanto ouvem a vossa música?

Sim, completamente. Nós queríamos levar as pessoas dentro da canção, para estes lugares que tentávamos criar. Bem, essa era a ideia de qualquer maneira.

(ING) Your photos and music videos have the psychedelic vibe that go along perfectly with your songs. Was it your intention to take people on a “trip” while listening to your music?

Yes completely, we wanted to take people into the song, to these places we were trying to create. Well that was the idea anyway.

(PT) Dito isto, como é que surgem com ideias para os vossos vídeos?

Nós apenas tentamos encontrar coisas que se aproximam à nossa imagem incial da música que tenham a mesma sensação.

(ING) That being said, how do you come up with ideas for your music videos?

We just try and find things that come close to our initial musical image, that have the same feel.

(PT) Qual é a história por detrás de ‘Wandering Eyes’?

Mais uma vez veio dos improvisos mas rapidamente ficou claro através destes que era sobre alguém que está demasiado “dentro” e não consegue sair. Apesar de realmente querer, esse alguém fundamentalmente mudou-se para poder lidar, modificando o que em tempos foi. A negação de si mesmo.

(ING) What’s the story behind 'Wandering Eyes'?

Again it came from ad-libbing phrases but it quickly came clear from them it was about someone who is in too deep and can't get out. Even though they truly want to they've fundamentally changed themselves to cope, altered who they once were. A denial of oneself.

(PT) Numa escala de 1 a 50 o quão psicadélico consideram as vossas canções?

Um saudável 32.

(ING) In a scale of 1 to 50 how psychedelic would you consider your songs to be?

A healthy 32.

(PT) Vocês são uma banda DIY (do it yourself)?

Sim, decidimos desde o início que queríamos criar um EP sem qualquer ajuda de fora, do início ao fim. Da gravação à masterização, tem sido tudo feito por nós mesmos. Apenas queríamos ver se realmente o conseguíamos fazer.

(ING) Are you a DIY band?

Yes, we decided from the start we wanted to create an EP with no outside help from start to finish. From recording to mastering it has all been done by ourselves. We just wanted to see if we could do it really.

(PT) Que ferramentas usam para conseguir a atenção das pessoas?

Nada de especial na verdade, apenas os meios [de comunicação] habituais. Na realidade nunca fomos tão bons a promovermo-nos, é ainda uma curva de aprendizagem.

(ING) What resources/tools do you use to get people’s attention?

Nothing different really just the usual media. We have never been that good at promoting ourselves really, it's still a learning curve.

(PT) Embora apenas tenham publicado três* músicas, acham que a reacção das pessoas tem sido positiva?

Do que temos visto e ouvido, sim. Nós recebemos imensas mensagens positivas das pessoas, o que é agradável. Estou grato pelas pessoas gostarem, assim como nós gostamos de escrever.

(ING) Even though you only have three songs out to the public, do you think people’s reactions have been positive?

Yes from what we’ve seen and heard. We get lots a positive messages from people which is nice. Glad people enjoy it, as we enjoyed writing it.

(PT) Sabem falar português ou têm algum talento especial escondido?

O Peter está a aprender alemão e está de facto a tornar-se bastante bom mas para além disso, na realidade não haha a música é o nosso talento.

(ING) Can you speak Portuguese or have any special hidden talents?

Peter is currently learning german and he's getting really good but other than that not really haha, music is our only talent.

(PT) Quais são os vossos objectivos com a carreira musical?

Apenas continuar a melhorar, aproximarmo-nos ao que queremos alcançar musicalmente. Não temos nenhum objectivo, apenas progredir a sério. Nós já estamos a fazer o que adoramos, se mais pessoas quiserem ouvir e juntarem-se a nós, excelente nós estaremos à espera.

(ING) What are your main goals with your music career? (for example world tours etc)

Just to carry on getting better. To get closer to what we want to achieve musically. We have no big aims really just to progress. We are already doing what we love, if more people want to listen and join us, great we'll be waiting.
