Olivver The Kid Interview // Entrevista

We interviewed Olivver The Kid (former drummer of the Neighbourhood) and we talked about how was touring with Halsey and Young Rising Sons, his fans, his music and plans for the future. Read everything below.

Watch & Listen: You did a tour with Halsey and Young Rising Sons. How was it?

Olivver: Amazing! Great shows, great people. Ashley has been my friend for years and the YRS dudes and I clicked pretty instantly. Very grateful for that opportunity.

Watch & Listen: Tu fizeste uma tour com a Halsey e os Young Rising Sons. Como é que foi?  
Olivver: Fantástico! Ótimos concertos, ótimas pessoas. A Ashley é minha amiga há anos e os rapazes YRS e eu demo-nos bem muito instantaneamente. Muito grato por essa oportunidade. 

W&L: Are you going to release new songs anytime soon?

Olivver: Well, soon is a relative term. I am hard at work on a new project. I don't want to be another soundcloud artist or hype machine artist and put out songs all willy nilly. These songs mean a lot to me. Every song takes a long time to make and takes a lot out of me physically, emotionally, financially. So, I want to make sure this next project is perfect and then put it out as a whole body of work.

W&L: Vais lançar novas músicas em breve?
Olivver: Bem, "em breve" é um termo relativo. Estou a trabalhar no duro num novo projeto. Eu não quero ser outro artista no soundcloud ou um artista de uma máquina exagerada e lançar músicas à toa. Estas músicas significam muito para mim. Cada canção demora muito tempo a fazer e tira muito de mim fisicamente, emocionalmente, financeiramente. Por isso, quero ter a certeza que este próximo projeto é perfeito e depois colocá-lo como um corpo de trabalho inteiro. 

W&L: You were in different bands and other projects before. Was that helpful when you went solo and you were trying to figure out what you wanted to as a solo artist?

Olivver: Yeah, it's all a learning experience. Every band, every project, ever album, every song. It's all a learning experience for future endeavors & releases.

W&L: Estiveste em diferentes bandas e projetos antes. Isso ajudou quando ficaste a solo e estavas a tentar descobrir o que que querias fazer como um artista a solo? 
Olivver: Sim, é tudo uma experiência de aprendizagem. Cada banda, cada projeto, cada álbum, cada música. É tudo uma experiência de aprendizagem para futuros esforços e lançamentos.

W&L: How do you come up with ideas for your music videos? 

Olivver: Some i've had forever, some are collaborative ideas with the directors/DP's & some just come to me.

W&L: Como é que tens ideias para os teus videoclips? 
Olivver: Algumas tenho desde sempre, algumas são ideias colaborativas com os diretores e os DP's e algumas apenas me surgem.

W&L: You seem to have a very close relationship with your fans. How do you feel about that?

Olivver: I like it. I hate the whole 'rockstar' mentality. Musicians are not better than anyone else. Nobody is better than anyone else. We are all organisms on a giant rock floating through space. We are all equals.

W&L: Pareces ter uma relação muito próxima com os teus fãs. Como é que te sentes com isso? 
Olivver: Eu gosto. Odeio toda a mentalidade 'rockstar'. Os músicos não são melhores do que ninguém. Ninguém é melhor do que os outros. Nós somos todos organismos numa pedra gigante a flutuar através do espaço. Somos todos iguais.

W&L: When you are making songs do you write the lyrics first or do you make the melody first?

Olivver: It depends. Probably melody first 70% of the time.

W&L: Quando estás a fazer músicas escreves primeiro a letra ou fazes a melodia primeiro? 
Olivver: Depende. Provavelmente a melodia primeiro 70% das vezes.

W&L: You’ve made a song called “Time” with Skizzy Mars and G-Eazy. How did that collaboration come up?

Olivver: Skizzy hit me up about doing a remix of Lucy a while back and it went really well, so he hit me up for a hook on his record. He liked it & I liked it so he used it. As for G we both knew him separately, so it just made sense, all the homies getting on a track together.

W&L: Fizeste uma música chamada "Time" com o Skizzy Mars e o G-Eazy. Como é que essa colaboração surgiu? 
Olivver: O Skizzy falou-me sobre fazer um remix da Lucy há algum tempo atrás e correu muito bem, por isso, ele pediu-me para fazer um colaboração no seu álbum. Ele gostou e eu gostei por isso ele usou. Em relação ao G, nós conhecemos-o separadamente, por isso, fez sentido, todos os amigos a darem-se bem num tema juntos.

W&L: Why and how did you come up with the words “pure trash”? 

Olivver: They are tattooed on me. It's a reminder that sometimes I feel worthless. Sometimes I feel insignificant. Sometimes I don't. It's a reminder that I feel, that we all feel. That i'm human.

W&L: Porquê e como é que te surgiram as palavras "pure trash" (puro lixo)?
Olivver: Elas estão tatuadas em mim. É um lembrete que às vezes me sinto inútil. Às vezes sinto-me insignificante. Às vezes não. É um lembrete que eu sinto, que todos sentimos. Que eu sou humano.

W&L: Lately, there’s been a lot of talking about streaming music especially about Spotify. What’s your opinion about that? 

Olivver: Anyway someone can get music is cool with me. But I will say, albums are meant to be listened to all the way through. Transitions and emotions from song to song matter. It's all one collective piece of art that we try and make. Not 10-12 separate pieces of art. At least that's how I look at it.

W&L: Ultimamente, tem havido muitas conversas sobre stream de música, especialmente sobre o Spotify. Qual é a tua opinião sobre isso? 
Olivver: De qualquer das formas que alguém consiga ter música está fixe para mim. Mas eu irei dizer, os álbuns são para serem ouvidos até ao fim. Transições e emoções de uma música para outra interessam. É tudo uma obra coletiva de arte que nós tentamos e fazemos. Não é 10-12 obras de arte separadas. Pelo menos é como olho para isso. 

W&L: As an artist, what or who are your biggest inspirations?

Olivver: The Avett Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Ryan Adams, Pantera, Stevie Wonder, Brand New, Frank Ocean, etc...

W&L: Como um artista, quais são as tuas maiores inspirações?

W&L: Do you have any plans for the future?

Olivver: Touring Russia in June & working on this next project right now. Maybe some LA/SB dates before the tour in June.

W&L: Tens alguns planos para o futuro? 
Olivver: Tour na Rússia em junho e a trabalho no próximo projeto neste momento. Talvez algumas datas em LA/SB antes da tour em junho.

W&L: Lastly, would you like to say anything to your Portuguese fans?
