Youthless Interview // Entrevista

Sebastiano Ferranti and Alex Klimovitsky, form the garage-rock duo Youthless. Therefore, we interviewed them before they opened Unknown Mortal Orchestra's show, in Lisbon. During the interview, the band talked about how they met, their new songs "Golden Spoon" and "Attention" and their show at ZDB.

Watch&Listen: How did you two meet?
Alex Klimovitsky: We met at Instituto Espanhol. Which is a spanish school in Algés. We were both from families that speak english who were living here. I am from New York. But my family moved, first to Spain and then here. And I only spoke a little bit of spanish so went to the spanish school. And we were like the only two kids who didn't really speak spanish. We spoke english. We were also learning how to play the guitar at the same time, and were on the same class. Sebastiano already had a little band. He showed me stuff that they were doing and I found it awesome. And then I was trying to play with this other guy. So we kinda all got together and formed a band. We just became friends/family since that.

W&L: Are you living in Lisbon now?
Alex: No, I'm kinda nomadic. I'm always around so... I used to live in Alfama, for many years. But for the last 3 or 4 years I've just been moving around the world a little bit. But I come back. I'm here a lot. And Sebastiano has a family here.

W&L: Can you talk a little bit about your new songs "Golden Spoon" and "Attention"?
Alex: They are part of a general theme of the record that we are not suppose to talk about yet. In the record, each of them fit in like a little narrative. But on their own their about separate things. "Golden Spoon" it was a moment of intense personal chaos for me. I kind of destroyed my back in the inside. And I didn't even knew if I was going ever to be able to run, hold a baby or anything! It was pretty crazy. And at the same time I was back in New York for the first time in a long time. I was there for 5 months during the surgery and everything. I hadn't been in New York for that long in a long period of time. But I was loving it, I love New York! I was enjoying it. I love it here and I love it there. And even with all the stuff I was going through... I was trying to see it like an adventure. So it fits in this part of the narrative of the record. It's like the end of an old world, and all this chaos that you can't even comprehend. If you really look critically to the world around us today, like a lot of people do, you see that it looks like on the verge to collapse. It feels unsustainable, feels totally crazy. And yet your personal life continues. And I think that your personal life on some levels it's very terrifying and depressing. But at the same your life goes on. You're in love, happy, excited... And it's about that. Walking through an apocalypse and still be very in love with life. That's what "Golden Spoon" was about. And I think that's a healthy way to transform through the apocalypse. How to get to the next thing. "Attention" is different. "Attention" is kind of playing on the idea of anxiety and tension and what's comming next. I think that right now is a very difficult moment to be present in. Because everything is so fucked up and so chaotic. And the disasters that we are facing as a planet are so huge and so overwhelming. There's ecomic disasters, war. Everywhere people are fighting for resources and all the stuff. I think is very difficult for us to really judge where are we at right now. All I see in culture, media and news is projections for the future. People trying to figure out how to steer everything in a different direction or predicting where we're gonna go. If it is good or bad. And there is this technological singularity utopian thinking. And there is the thinking that the world is crashing and we can't sustain it. So the song is about that. It's about playing on both. It's kind like terror and excitement and utopia and apocalypse, all togehter. And it's about this. It's literally "pay attention!".

W&L: Did you enjoy your show at ZDB?
Sebastiano Ferranti: Yeah! It was a lot of fun.

W&L: You had dresses at ZDB. Are you going to have dresses tonight?
Sebastiano: We aren't sure. We have them here, the dresses. We also just have the face painting without wearing the dresses. We aren't sure because we just did that, and we would like to change it. But we could do another one... We'll see. Maybe.

W&L: How does it feel opening for Unknow Mortal Orchestra with two sold out shows?
Sebastiano: We're excited. Actually next three shows have sold out. So it's good. We are playing with the correct people. And good bands.
Alex: I'm really excited to see them play, cause I'm a big fan!

W&L: Can you talk about the next three shows?
Sebastiano: They're good. We've got a new record on our hands. It's always good to play the new stuff. Yes the next three are sold out. There some other shows comming up but we can't talk about that yet. We're excited to play with Francisco Ferreira!

O Sebastiano Ferranti e o Alex Klimovitsky, formam o duo de garage-rock Youthless. Por isso, entrevistámos-los antes de abrirem o concerto dos Unknown Mortal Orchestra, em Lisboa. Durante a entrevista, a banda falou sobre como se conheceram, as suas novas músicas "Golden Spoon" e "Attention", e o seu concerto no ZDB.

Watch and Listen: Como é que vocês os dois se conheceram?
Alex Klimovitsky: Conhecemos-nos no Instituto Espanhol que é uma escola de espanhol, que fica em Algés. Nós éramos ambos de famílias que falam inglês que estavam a viver aqui. Eu era de Nova Iorque, mas a minha família mudou-se primeiro para Espanha e depois para aqui. E eu só falava um bocadinho de espanhol então fui para a escola de espanhol. Nós éramos os únicos miúdos que não falávamos mesmo espanhol, nós falávamos inglês. Na altura estávamos ambos a aprender guitarra, e éramos da mesma turma. O Sebastiano tinha uma bandinha e mostrou-me as coisas que eles andavam a fazer, e eu gostei imenso. Para além disso, eu estava a tentar formar uma banda com outro rapaz, e então decidimos-nos juntar todos e formar uma banda. E desde aí que nos tornámos amigos/família.

W&L: Estão a viver em Lisboa agora?
Alex: Não, eu sou meio nómada. Estou sempre por aí, portanto... Eu vivi em Alfama por muitos anos. Mas nos últimos 3 ou 4 anos que tenho andado por aí, à volta do mundo. Mas volto sempre, ando por cá muitas vezes. O Sebastiano tem família cá.

W&L: Podem falar-nos um pouco das vossas novas canções, "Golden Spoon" e "Attention"?
Alex: Elas fazem parte do tema geral do álbum, do qual ainda não podemos falar. No álbum, cada uma integra-se e faz parte de uma pequena narrativa. Mas por si só, são acerca de coisas distintas. A "Golden Spoon" foi, pessoalmente, sobre um momento de caos intenso para mim. Eu meio que destruí as minhas costas no interior. E nem sabia se ia poder voltar a correr, agarrar um bebé ou qualquer coisa que fosse. Foi de loucos. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, eu estava de volta a Nova Iorque pela primeira vez num longo período de tempo. Estive lá durante 5 meses, por causa da cirurgia e tudo mais. Há imenso tempo, que já não estava em Nova Iorque por um período de tempo tão longo. Mas estava a adorar, quero dizer, eu adoro Nova Iorque. Estava mesmo a gostar. Eu adoro estar por lá, como adoro estar por aqui. E mesmo com tudo o que estava a acontecer, eu estava a tentar ver tudo como se fosse... uma aventura. E é isso, a música enquadra-se nesta parte da narrativa que existe no álbum. É como se fosse o fim do antigo mundo, e todo este caos que tu não consegues compreender. Se realmente olhares criticamente para o mundo que nos rodeia, como muita gente gente faz, tu consegues ver que parece estar à beira de colapsar. Parece insustentável e totalmente de loucos. Mas ainda assim, a tua vida pessoal continua. E eu penso que a tua vida pessoal é terrível em alguns níveis e também depressiva. Mas mesmo assim, a vida continua. Apaixonas-te, ficas feliz, ficas entusiasmada. E é sobre isso. Andar pelo meio do apocalipse e mesmo assim continuares apaixonada com a vida. A "Golden Spoon" é sobre isso mesmo. Acho que é uma maneira saudável de te transformares através do apocalipse. Como chegar à próxima coisa. A "Attention" é diferente. A "Attention" abusa da ideia de ansiedade e tensão e do que vem a seguir. Acho que o presente em que vivemos é um momento difícil para se estar presente em. Porque está tudo tão lixado e é tudo tão caótico. Os desastres que enfrentamos, enquanto planeta, são tão grandes e esmagadores. Existem desastres económicos, guerra. Toda a gente tenta lutar por recursos e por tudo. Acho que é muito difícil julgarmos onde estamos de momento. Tudo o que eu vejo na cultura, media e nas notícias é projeções para o futuro. As pessoas tentam descobrir como conduzir tudo numa direção oposta ou tentam prever onde vamos parar. Se é bom ou mau. E há o pensamento utópico em singularidade tecnológica. E existe o pensamento de que o mundo está a cair e que não o conseguimos suster. E a canção é sobre isso. Sobre terror e excitação, sobre utopia e apocalipse, tudo de uma vez. E é sobre isto. Sobre literalmente prestar atenção.

W&L: Divertiram-se no vosso concerto na Galeria Zé dos Bois?
Sebastiano Ferranti: Sim! Divertimos-nos imenso.

W&L: Vocês tinham vestidos na Galeria Zé dos Bois. Vão usar vestidos hoje à noite?
Sebastiano: Não temos a certeza. Nós temos os vestidos connosco. Nós temos também pinturas faciais que podemos usar sem os vestidos. Ainda não temos a certeza porque como já fizemos isso, gostavámos de mudar. Mas podíamos fazer outra vez... Bem veremos. Talvez.

W&L: Como é que se sentem por abrir o concerto dos Unknow Mortal Orchestra, que têm os dois concertos esgotados?
Sebastiano: Estamos muito entusiasmados. Aliás nós temos três concertos a seguir, e estão todos esgotados. Por isso é bom. Andamos a tocar com as pessoas corretas. E com boas bandas.
Alex: Estou muito entusiasmado para vê-los, porque sou um grande fã!

W&L: Podem falar-nos um pouco acerca dos próximos três concertos?
Sebastiano: São muito boas. Nós temos um novo álbum em mãos, e é sempre bom tocar as novas coisas. Sim, os próximos três estão esgotados. Irão haver mais concertos em breve, mas ainda não podemos falar disso. E estamos empolgados por tocar com o Francisco Ferreira!
